Roseville Skate School

General Program Information

The Roseville Skating School is under the direction of the Roseville Parks and Recreation Department and is run in accordance with the ISI (Ice Skating Industry). We are dedicated to providing a quality ice skating program for the recreational to advanced skaters.

Our tot and beginner classes introduce children to the fundamentals of ice skating in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. To help make sure your skater is prepared and can have an enjoyable experience please read the recommendations below.

ISI Instructional Program (Altered)

The ISI instructional program has a logical progression of skill development, whereby skills learned in each level build on skills achieved in the preceding level. It appeals to first-time skaters because it teaches skills they can master almost immediately. Slight alterations and skills have been added and modified for each level in order to enhance skater skills.

Yearly Sessions

There are three sessions a year:

  • Fall Session: September - November (8 week program)

  • Winter/Spring Session: December - April (16 week program) with option of participating in annual Ice Show (April)

  • Summer Session: June - August (8 week session)

  • Daytime classes are also available throughout the year. This program offers skating lessons for pre-school and home-schooled children. Each session is 30 minutes with an additional 30 minutes of practice time.

Private Lessons

The Roseville Skating School staff are also available for private lessons. For more information please contact the Skating Director, Pamela Sandborg, at 651-792-7131.

Skates

Skaters can use figure skates or hockey skates. Blades must be made of steel (not aluminum). Double runner skates are NOT allowed. We do offer rental skates at a price of $3 a class.

  • Proper fit is a must. Buying skates too big for your child to “grow into” is not recommended. The skates should be firm enough to support the ankle.  Skates should fit snugly with one pair of lightweight socks or tights.

  • Never walk with skates on in areas of the building where the floor is not covered with rubber matting.

  • To protect the blades against rusting, wipe them completely dry after each use and before putting the skate guards on them. At home remove the skate guards to assure proper drying.

  • Make sure your child’s blades are sharp for each day of class, so your child can skate to the best of their ability. If you need help in determining whether the blades are sharp or not, the instructors will be happy to assist you.

Classes

The first couple weeks of the session are focused on trying to group skaters by test level and ability.

  • There are no make-ups for missed classes. Remember to mark your calendar with days we do not have classes. Those dates can be found on the registration form, online or are on your receipt.

  • It would be helpful if the parents know the name of their child’s instructor in case the child forgets.

  • Students are evaluated at each class lesson to see if they are ready to be tested to move to the next level. (What you see as a parent up in the stands might not meet the full requirement for passing the test).

Clothing

When dressing for ice skating, wear layered clothing. This will provide warmth without bulk.

  • Mittens or gloves are a must!

  • A hat or helmet may be worn for protection.

  • Helmets are recommended for all beginner skaters. Hockey or bike helmets work great!

  • Loose fitting pants are ideal. Snow pants are not recommended. They are slippery, which makes it hard for a child to get up after falling.
